A guide to retirement villages and aged care

How accessing the right care can improve your retirement lifestyle

When you start to investigate the Renaissance retirement lifestyle, you might be amazed by the opportunities your new situation will bring you.

These days you’ll find retirement villages offer more and more options for access to tailored care and support, which allows you to lead an independent life. Gone are the days when retirement villages were strictly ‘independent living’.

At Renaissance we believe that the key to a fulfilling and enjoyable retirement is to have the right balance between living independently, and having care available if and when you need it.

In this news post, we’ll look at the ways accessing customised care can help you stay independent for longer.

How in-home care helps you maintain your independence

The term “care” is often taken to mean just high care, or aged care. It tends to conjure up images of hospital beds, wheelchairs, and lots of very old people with major needs!

But in fact that’s far the case. When we talk about “care” we actually mean things like domestic help or housecleaning in your home – not simply high needs medical care.

We find that many retirees can at first be resistant to asking for the care they need. It’s understandable. After all, you’ve managed to look after yourself perfectly well all your life up until this point!

But a major reason for arranging in-home care is to help you to maintain your independence. That’s why it’s best to access the care you need early, so that you can access the benefits and enjoy an improved lifestyle.

The fact is that, once you access care in your home, you’ll find you have plenty more time to spend on doing the things you really want to do. Whether it’s arts and crafts, a hobby you're passionate about, or spending time playing with the grandkids, having access to the personalised care you need will improve your lifestyle no end.

Access the care you need, when you need it

Another point to remember with personalised care is that it can change as your needs do.

If your circumstances change – for example after you’ve had a medical operation – you might decide that you need some extra help around the house, just for a few weeks. That’s perfectly fine! You don’t need to worry about being stuck with full-time, “full on” care that you don’t really need.

And if you’re living with your spouse or partner, accessing in-home care can help take some of the burden off their shoulders while you’re unwell or recovering. It can help them avoid getting run down and becoming sick themselves by trying to do the work of two people.

Of course, you can always access this type of care in your house in the suburbs. But you won’t have the added support of our Renaissance village community itself. You’ll find that your neighbours, our staff, and the overall environment will all contribute towards supporting you as you get things back to normal.
